In addition to the Burning Man Honorarium that we received to create a new version of Wave on the Playa (of which, more in an upcoming post), we also co-created, with Camp Cyberia/Polaris, a mutant vehicle, or art car.

Art cars are a Burning Man tradition – based on some kind of car or truck, but it mustn’t look like one. There are dozens of these moving around the playa, day and night, looking like what they ain’t: anything from a flame-throwing octopus, dragon fly, shark, the Golden Gate Bridge to a fully fledged 747 (although that one actually is a 747).

Our contribution is based on an armoured vehicle, an M1078 Stewart & Stevenson, owned by Camp Polaris. Our mission was to turn it into a volume of light, building on our experiences of many years working with such things (see Submergence).

A total blast driving around the Playa, DJ on the top deck, pumping out dance music to a crowd of revellers that emerged from the playa for an impromptu party.

And an interesting new departure for the Submergence project, moving into dynamic spaces, and a new use for the realtime VJ tools we developed for Four Tet.
