Phase Shifter
Sound, light, movement, space.
A kinetic sculpture defined by the interplay of a line of moving sound and light sources that work together to create an ever-shifting audio-visual landscape.
Inspired by our innate sensitivity to the location of a moving sound (no doubt deriving from a vital primeval survival instinct), Phase Shifter plays with sound, form and movement in physical space.
The work consists of an array of suspended moving ‘orbs’ (1). They are choreographed to collectively define an evolving series of movement sets and forms in physical space. Each orb also emits sound, determined by its position. As the orbs move, morphing from one form to another, so new harmonies, phase patterns and chords emerge, defined by the form they are sonically reflecting. The result is a meditative evolving soundscape, where each form has its own emerging mood and a sonic timbre.
Phase Shifter was originally commissioned by Real Ideas Organisation, and shown as a solo exhibition in the Royal William Yard, Plymouth UK, in May 2021. A further iterations were shown at Squidsoup’s solo exhibition in Bristol UK (Summer 2023).
(1) Each orb contains an on-board processor, speaker and LED lights. Using wi-fi, collections of orbs work together to create highly spatialised choreographed audiovisual media experiences. The system, called AudioWave, has been developed by Squidsoup over several years and is the basis of several of their works, including Wave, Murmuration and In-finite
